Being an Artist & Small Altars

Being an Artist & Small Altars

Saint_Theresa_Bright_White IMG_1654 IMG_1655

I love making just about anything.  My favorite item is to make small art.  I do paint large pictures but at this time I feel lead to work in smaller pieces, more focused in the image and what I am attempting to say with the art.

I keep a small altar in my own room… Virginia Woolf  (You cannot find peace by avoiding life.  Virginia Woolf) is an author whose life and death has always spoken to me… to keep a room of ones own… I love small things, romantic things and ritual..   This quote by Ms. Woolf also speaks mightly to me  “Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.”
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own

I need my own space, I keep my room sacred and have places to be still and quiet!   I am an introvert so I need quiet.

The piece I am showcasing here is Saint Therese of Lisieux “The Little Flower.”  I hope you enjoy viewing the piece. I has many beautiful features, pearls, crosses, a crown, rhinestones, what I call bling tape (!) paint, collaged pieces of paper, and words, peace and dream.  It is something I wish for everyone, peace and dream, or really Dream Peace, for yourself and the entire Earth…

I do have it for sale on my Etsy site

I went to a meeting yesterday considering a place on a panel of other artists, it was quite educational and enjoyable.   I plan on volunteering to jury other artists applying to sell their wares at the 23rd Street ArtistsMarket, in Austin, TX.  The Market has been around since the 1970s. It has much historical and artistic value to the citizens, and local artists.  I am thrilled to be a part of this!  More soon

Aside

Kabbalah

Kabbalah is a set of esoteric teachings meant to explain the relationship between an unchanging, eternal, and mysterious Ein Sof (no end) and the mortal and finite universe (God’s creation). While it is heavily used by some denominations, it is not a religious denomination in itself. It forms the foundations of mystical religious interpretation. Kabbalah seeks to define the nature of the universe and the human being, the nature and purpose of existence, and various other ontological questions. It also presents methods to aid understanding of these concepts and thereby attain spiritual realisation.

The silences

of life linger

Momentarily

on lips

Pursed ready

for love

That does

not come

Haunting persistent eyes

Play in shadows

Lost

Merriment gone

Playfulness

in darkness

Reckoning

into loneliness

Moving blocks

to and fro

Stacking

and

knocking down

bruising while

discarding

summer of yesteryear 2013

waves scarlet

waves scarlet

I saw her waving for the last time. Her eyes almost purple. Waving to say hello and goodbye all at the same time. The flags rippled in the wind. I thought of the cat at home saying goodbye too.  The dishes were left undone. The scarf on my neck was too tight. My stomach ached a bit. The building was tall casting shade down resembling the night she and I met.  What friends. What loss. New beginnings.  What will Paris be like for her. Painting the colors of the city.  Fountains.  Leaves.  Streets with stones that whisper names of old. I will miss it all. I will paint it, write it bleed it out veins scarlet.

Breathing of Iris

Breathing of Iris

The Breathing of Iris series will contain thoughts and imagery primarily of the Flower of the Iris or the Iris of an eye.  Or perchance other thoughts…

An Iris is grown from the root of the “rhizome.”  The rhizome or roots is buried into the soil or mother earth.  An Iris is used in perfumes, and has medicinal properties.  An Iris is also used in essential oils made from the flowers — used in aromatherapy and can be used as sedative medicines. Once the dried rhizomes were given to infants who were teething (Ahhg!).  Some brands of Gin use the orris root and iris flowers (Bombay Sapphire© and Magellan gin©) for flavoring and color.

The Ritual

Magical center breath,      heaves and a sigh…

The uncanny                     Fades

the shapeless                  draft of paper smudged

tiraboleiros swings,

smoke drifts and floats,

the small surprising clinks of the chain…

palm leaves                               dried from past Sunday’s

collected                                   the liturgy sung,

not in flat sad words or flat earth noise

but the                                     lilting of voices so pure only the children hear

the piper play                         and bagpipes echo.
